Raku: Leaf Platter
This Leaf Platter is made
with white stoneware clay, handformed on a humped plaster bat. The leaf
impression on the surface of the platter is made with a real leaf, which fell at
my feet during the Artistic License show in Costa Mesa, California. The back and
rim are finished with a glossy copper green glaze. The surface of the platter is
richly textured and finished with a dry iron wash. Because of the harshness of
the raku process and the size of these platters, I have a survival rate of about
60%. This means that for every 3 finished platters I make, I've lost 2 in the
process. It's a frustrating percentage but I love the finished product; so to
me, it's worth it.
